Enable Geofencing on Ecobee
- Start by installing the Ecobee app on your smartphone if you haven't already. Make sure you have a compatible smartphone with location services enabled.
- Open the Ecobee app and log in to your account. Ensure your Ecobee thermostat is connected to the app.
- In the app, access the main menu. You can find this typically by tapping on the three horizontal lines or the profile icon, usually located in the top left or right corner of the screen.
- Select the "Account" option from the menu, and then look for "Family" settings. This area is where you can manage all family-related settings and permissions.
- Within the Family settings, you should find an option for "Geofencing." Tap on it to open the Geofencing settings page.
- Enable geofencing by toggling the switch. You will need to grant location access to the app for geofencing to work effectively. Follow any prompts to allow location permissions on your phone.
- Add family members or other people who will also be part of the geofencing feature. This ensures that geofencing operates based on the location of all added members.
- Define the radius for your geofence. This is the distance from your home where the Ecobee will recognize your phone's location. Adjust the radius according to your preference. A smaller radius means the thermostat will react closer to home, while a larger radius allows more advance notice.
- Save your settings and exit the menu. Your Ecobee thermostat should now adjust based on whether you're home or away according to the geofencing settings. Test the setup by moving within or outside the geofencing radius to ensure it is working as expected.
Troubleshooting Geofencing Issues
- If geofencing doesn't seem to work, verify that location services are enabled on your phone and that the Ecobee app has permission to access your location.
- Check for any app updates or device firmware updates, as these often fix bugs and improve functionality.
- Make sure that all family members added to the geofencing feature have also enabled location services on their phones. Each phone needs to have the Ecobee app with location permissions for geofencing to work properly.
- Restart the smartphone or the Ecobee thermostat if the geofencing feature doesn't activate or deactivate as expected. Sometimes a simple reboot can resolve connectivity issues.
