Linking Apple HomePod with Shared Home
- Ensure that your HomePod, iPhone, or iPad are all updated to the latest software version. You need the updated version for new features and compatibility with shared homes.
- Open the Home app on your iPhone or iPad. This app handles all your HomeKit devices, and ensuring your account is set up correctly here makes linking easier.
- If you're not yet a participant of the shared home, you'll need an invitation. Ask the primary home user to follow these steps: go to the Home app, tap the home icon in the upper left, select "Home Settings," then "Invite People." They need to enter the email or phone number linked to your Apple ID.
- Once you receive the invitation, accept it. Look for the invitation in the Home app. There might be a red badge on the software icon if there are pending invitations.
- Make sure the HomePod is placed in the correct room for easier control via Siri and the Home app. To assign the HomePod to a room, tap and hold the HomePod icon in the Home app, tap "Room," and choose the desired room.
- Check the permissions you've been granted. The owner of the shared home can restrict access to certain devices. Ensure you have the necessary permissions to control the HomePod.
- Try accessing or controlling the HomePod through Siri or the Home app to make sure everything is working properly. You can say, "Hey Siri, play music in the Living Room" or toggle features within the Home app to test connectivity.
Troubleshooting
- If you don't see the HomePod in the Home app, ensure Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are on, and that you're logged into the same Apple ID used in the Home app.
- Restart your HomePod by unplugging it and plugging it back after 15 seconds. Sometimes, simply resetting connections can fix issues.
- If having sharing issues, double-check the Apple ID for discrepancies. If you changed your email or phone number, make sure the updates are reflected across your iCloud and Home app settings.
- Consider removing the HomePod from the Home app and re-adding it if all else fails. Go to the Home app, long press on HomePod, scroll down, and select "Remove Accessory." Follow the initial setup process again.
